I thought if i could get a device that provides the same signals as my test tape at the level specified by my manual (1.23v)i would be on the right track. A short answer on your part gave me the impression that you were not satisfied with the answer. Considering I give the info for free and have written extensively on the subject, I figure free info is worth wading through some stuff you may not think you need. Or, ego aside, the info isn't where I think it is, your feedback helps me to make some things more clear. Knowing you read the articles justifies my extra time. The goal is to minimize the time I spend answering email -- with two kids and working from home, I have precious little time. I don't think the Tone Plug is the answer for you, so I updated my Test Equipment page to show you the better alternative. I also agree with you that dBv et al should be on a need to know basis. That said, having noise reduction changes the way you may think the alignment procedure should go. For example, it is not so important what level you feed the MS-16 but that you have satisfied the dbx unit's level requirements. (Most dbx units do not have USER level adjustments. Feed 1kHz to the machine, in INPUT, switching the dbx in and out while monitoring the machine's meters. You are feeding the correct level when the meters do not change from dbx IN to dbx OUT. only then do you perform a record alignment, with the dbx OUT. The only other warning I'd give is that, once the dbx is in, the meters are useless because of the dbx compression. Check levels with the dbx out, then remember to switch it back in to record. Also, don't try to saturate the tape with the dbx in, this is a waste of time. how's that? Currently i have been able to use a behringer dsp8000 ultracurve processor to supply the signals, and just verifying it with a multimeter, i set my mixer trim knob at the +4 designation, send the various test signals at 1.23v into the mic input, from the insert i send the signal to the ms-16(where the meters on the tape machine have previously been set to:0=1.23v).With the tape machine in input mode i adjust the amplifiers pot so the the machines output equals 1.23v on the multimeter(the Vu meters should at this point read 0.)I would appreciate any comments on my methods,i already own the extender card, the new button panel, and i have replaced the heads and had them aligned by JRF, the unit also has the dbx units and i have recently purchased the AQ65 remote which im still trying to verify it works correctly. No offense but what do ya think? P.S.I have the ms-16 manual which makes brief mention that there is a remote unit and explains its purpose but no details.
