Fur Seal Recording: First Session

On Monday 23 June 2002 I was asked to initiate a new recording facility installed in a former Carriage House in downtown Minneapolis.  The control room and Studio are integrated (no glass or walls) the second floor takes up only half of the second story (over the control area) leaving full height for the Studio Area.

The three piece Jazz Trio consisted of piano, acoustic bass and drums.  The mic list is detailed below.  Seven channels were recorded straight to ProTools @ 88.2 kHz/24-bit, mixed to stereo (some live, some during playback from PT) into a Fostex DV-40 four channel DVD recorder (the other two channels captured an Audio Technica stereo shotgun mic from the second floor "balcony" using a Great River MP-2x transformerless preamp.)

Monitoring during recording was via the Grace 901 DA converter and Reference Headphone Amp using Sennheiser HD600 headphones (sweet).  ProAc Studio 100 Monitors were used during Playback.

No signal processing was used during recording or mixing.  The stereo files were digitally transferred to a modified Alesis Masterlink @ 88.2kHz/24-bit, then normalized, rendered to 44.1kHz/16-bit and then burned to RedBook CD.

Two versions of the same tune are provided, one "Flat-No Compression" and the other has been processed using the TC DYnamizer plug-in for Soundscape.  Cool Edit Pro Version 2 was used to convert to mp3.

These files are now located on a fast server so stream or download (but do not distribute).

Plan B
The files below are rough mixes of a group called "Plan B" and mixed by ec. If the sound files may not stream and must be down-loaded typically by selecting the option "save link as."

BOB-V3: 8MB mp3 (normal server)
Recorded as 24 tracks via 16-bit adat by Plan B.  Original mix started March 2001 by ec on Soundscape V3.3 with automation using CM Lab's Motor Mix controller.  Then I got distracted by having a second child...  Latest MIX version via Mackie / Soundscape 32 with Mixpander card.  MP3 conversion by Cool Edit Pro.  Curious that CEP provides far more bit-rate options than Soundscape...

Jennifer: 2.3 MB mp3 file
Recorded by Plan B. Analog mix from three adats (in 16-bit mode) via behringer mixer, august 2000, by ec.

Mercedes Benz:  (mp3)
The Janis Joplin song goes "Acapulco" with the stunned vocalizations of EC.  Recorded on a Fostex FD-8 in 1999.  Mixed via Soundscape RED / 32 June 2003.

Get a Life: (mp3)
Recorded on the Fostex FD-4 and mixed on a Soundscape workstation in 1998.  Written and sung by EC with instruments, arrangments and programming by Kasim Sulton.

We now return control to you...
